The BHP Billiton Science Awards recognise the outstanding work done by science teachers in Australia.

The BHP Billiton Science Awards are a partnership between BHP Billiton, the world's largest diversified resources company, CSIRO, Australia's premier scientific research organization and ASTA, the Australian Science Teachers Association.

Nine teacher finalists were selected from around Australia.

Soula Bennett

Head of Middle Years, Northcote High School, Melbourne nominated by the Science Teachers Association of Victoria (STAV)

Soula initiated and led the school’s first overseas science trip “NASA Space Camp” in 2007. She is not afraid to take risks both in classroom teaching and in response to emerging educational trends thus incorporating cutting edge science in to the program in ways that are meaningful and stimulating to her students. She has developed programs such as “Bringing Science to the Community”, “Get Radical – a year 11 Chemistry Program”, peer monitoring and a Tall Poppy Campaign. Soula has promoted science through her participation in STAV and she is currently the STAV President. Through her role in STAV she has initiated meetings with the wider science community, organised an on-line survey with educators and organised National Curriculum forums in partnership with VCAA. She is currently Head of Middle Years at Northcote High School.
